Paragliding and aerial photography: tips for capturing incredible views
While paragliding has become a popular activity for thrill-seekers and nature lovers, it also offers a unique opportunity to capture breathtaking aerial images. Based on our experience in aerial photography and video during tandem flights, here are a few tips for getting the most out of your camera during your paragliding adventures.
Preparing for your paragliding flight
Choosing the right equipment
Before you take off, it's crucial to choose the right equipment. Choose a lightweight, compact camera, such as a mirrorless or small SLR. Action cameras like GoPro are also an excellent choice, thanks to their durability and ease of installation.
Check settings
Make sure your camera is set up for flying conditions. Use an automatic or semi-automatic mode if you're not sure about manual settings. Set the ISO sensitivity to avoid blurring in the event of movement. A value between 100 and 400 is ideal on sunny days.
Techniques for shooting in the air
Using a stabilizer
To avoid blurred images, use a stabilizer or gimbal. This will help you achieve smooth video, even in windy conditions. If you're using a tripod, make sure it's firmly attached to your harness.
Composing your images
Think about composition before you shoot. Use the rule of thirds: place the key elements of your image on the lines or intersections of thirds. This will make your photos more dynamic and captivating.
Play with light
The time of day can have a huge impact on your photos. The golden hours, just after sunrise or before sunset, offer soft, warm light. Avoid flying in the middle of the day when the light is harsh and can create unwanted shadows.
Post-processing after your paragliding flight
Retouching your photos
Once you're back on the ground, your work isn't done. Use retouching software such as Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop to enhance your images. Adjust brightness, contrast and saturation to bring out the colors of your landscape.
Finally, don't forget to share your masterpieces! Platforms like Instagram and Facebook are ideal for showing off your aerial photography skills. Remember to use relevant hashtags to reach a wider audience. At K2 paragliding, we love your shares, likes and adventures, so don't hesitate to join our community and share your flights!
